Chapter Seven

Nat blocked Axl’s access to his brother. Anger surged through him. How could one man, the man who was supposed to be blood relation to Syd, beat the hell out of him? He didn’t understand, and he sure as hell wouldn’t allow the beating to continue.

“Why would you do this?” Nat asked. He held up both hands. “You’ll have to go through me to get to him. He’s bleeding and swollen.”

“So?” Axl flexed his hand. “I should’ve killed him when we were younger. Would’ve saved me the trouble now.”

“That’s awful.”

“That’s life. I’m bigger and faster. It should’ve been me with you on that mission. He wasn’t up for the job.” Axl lunged at Nat, but Nat shoved the bigger man back.

“At least, she died here at the Sanctuary, rather than at that zoo. Doesn’t that count for anything? You’re the fool who waited to see her until after she passed.” Nat eased forward, nudging Axl towards the corner. He spied Markas and John outside the building. Markas picked up his pace and hurried to the door.

“If I would’ve known before we left the zoo, I would’ve killed the bastards who planned to shoot her.” Axl puffed his chest.

“None of us knew this was going to happen until Markas got out. You couldn’t have done anything and if you’d have gone along with us this time, you would’ve gotten yourself killed.”

“So?” Axl growled. “I would’ve died with honor.”

“That’s crazy.”

“It wouldn’t make you care about me. You’re up his ass. Whatever he’s got that I don’t, I don’t understand. He’s a waste. You could be with me. No, you’re with a killer.” Axl flexed his hands again. “Now, let me finish the job.”

“No.” Nat stood tall. Everything made sense. Axl’s rage had been brought on by the passing of his mother, but part of the anger was because Axl hadn’t gotten what he’d wanted. “You’re beating him up because I’m not in bed with you. That’s ridiculous. Don’t punish him. This was the choice I made.”

“You’re stronger than him. Smarter.” Axl stood toe-to-toe with Nat. Behind him, Markas and John eased into the room.

“I’m stronger, maybe, but he’s the smart one.” Nat kept his gaze on Axl, but he noticed John attending to Syd. At least, someone would help the poor guy.

“He’s worthless.” Axl waved his hand. “Should be dead.”

“Because he’s got me?” Nat asked.

“Yes,” Axl snapped. “He’s the runt. No one cares about the weaklings.”

“He stood up to you, saved your mother, withstood the shit from all of us and kept his head up. That’s fucking strength to me.” Blood surged through Nat’s body, and his pride encouraged him. He wasn’t with Syd for giggles or only good fucking. He was there because Syd was his equal and his complement.

“You love him.” Axl’s eyes narrowed, and the furrows in his brow deepened. “You son of a bitch, you truly love him.”

“Maybe so.” More than maybe, but he wasn’t about to egg on Axl much more.

“You can’t.” Axl shook his head. “It’s not possible.
